However, Carwardine mainly uses secondary sources in his article such as autobiographies, various books, and news articles dealing with Abraham Lincoln. He quotes several news articles from during the Civil War time period. The use of these quotes made the article more interesting, and gave a direct idea of what was being said in the press during that time.
