His heroes- handsome, confident, and doomed blaze brilliantly before exploding, and his heroines are typically beautiful, intricate, and alluring. Fitzgerald started writing for periodicals, publishing early stories such as The Diamond as Big as The Ritz, later collected in Tales of The Jazz Age (1922). Fame and prosperity were both welcome and frightening; in The Beautiful and Damned (1922), he describes the life he and Zelda feared, a descent into ennui and dissipation. The Fitzgeralds moved in 1924 to the French Riviera, where they fell in with a group of American expatriates, described in his last completed novel, Tender Is The Night (1934). Shortly after their arrival, he completed his greatest work, The Great Gatsby (1925), which poignantly expresses his ambivalence about American life, at once vulgar and dazzlingly promising. Some of his finest short stories of this period, particularly The Rich Boy and Absolution, appeared in All the Sad Young Men (1926). His last work, the Hollywood novel The Last Tycoon (1941), was left unfinished at his death at 44 of alcohol-related causes. The text under analysis is an extract from the short story May Day. The text is about two friends, who are both twenty-four, Yale graduates of the year before the war. One of them is Philip Dean, a wealthy successful man, who is in his vacations in New York; the other friend is Gordon Sterrett, the straight opposition to his friend, an unsuccessful penniless man who is searching for a job in New York. In this extract Gordon Sterrett is begging Philip Dean to give him some money to make a fresh start. At the end they quite suddenly and definitely hated each other. The theme of the text is the conflict between rich and poor, . The introduction of the text is written in high-flown style. The setting is New York City at the end of the First World War (â€Å"There had been a war fought and won and the great city of the conquering people was crossed with triumphal arches and vivid with thrown flowers of white, red and rose†). The author shows pathos and triumph which is typical to chronicles and epic narrations with the help of different figures of speech, so he uses a lot of stylistic devises, such as epithets great and vivid city, triumphal arches, resonant wind of the brasses.  inversion: â€Å"There had been a war fought and won†¦Ã¢â‚¬ , â€Å"thrown flowers of white, red and rose†. The next part is narrated in the form of dialogue between two young friends. It is full of shortenings such as it’s, I’m, you’d, you’ll, I’ve, won’t, and , and vulgarisms: Every God damn thing†¦, I’ve made a hell of†¦.. The text is told in the 3rd person singular. Fitzgerald likes to include a lot of dialogue, not only to keep the readers attention, but also to elaborate on what was taking place throughout the story and give a more in-depth look into the lives of the characters in the story. The dialogues enabled the reader to feel as though you were a character in the story. Before a dialogue the narrator gives some background information indirectly to enable the reader to follow along with the interaction that is to take place between characters. Much of the detail he puts into the story act as a stage direction, similar to that of a play. The author introduced to a wide range of characters, though really there are only two types: the fortunate and the unlucky, the haves and have-nots. He represented them in a contrast. They are described indirectly through their actions, speech, thoughts, appearance. Fitzgerald could hardly make the distinction clearer than in the substantive opening chapter, which reacquaints old Yale graduates Gordon Sterrett (â€Å"his eyes †¦ framed below with the blue semicircle of ill health, heightened by an unnatural glow which coloured his face like a low, incessant fever†) and Philip Dean (â€Å"blond, ruddy and rugged †¦ Everything about him radiated fitness and bodily comfort†). Sterrett is down on his luck, and Dean finds that â€Å"there was something in his present misery that repelled him and hardened him, even though it excited his curiosity. By the end of the chapter, when Dean has loaned Sterrett five dollars, â€Å"they quite suddenly and definitely hated each other. † Firstly, the author depicted them in an opposition their appearance and clothing. They are described with the help of epithets: George Sterrett is a small, slender, darkly handsome man dressed in a shabby suit with ragged and linty shirt-cuff, faded and thumb-creased tie of former glory; while Philip Dean was blond, ruddy, and rugged under his thin pajamas. Everything about him radiated fitness and bodily comfort. He smiled frequently, showing large and prominent teeth., a family of thick silk shirts littered on the chairs amid impressive neckties and soft woollen socks. , dressed in blue silk pajamas, It was of very heavy silk, yellow, with a pale blue stripe and there were nearly a dozen of them, fresh underwear. The emotional state of main characters is rather different, too. It changes from enthusiastic, surprised and with a half-exuberance in the very beginning to anxious, depressive and with rising anger in the last paragraph: shook his head impatiently, . hated each other. Philip Dean is a self-affected person, also he is a former sportsman and the following details of his behavior â€Å"polishing the body, draping reluctantly, inspecting calves and knees, bestowing† depict it. Similarity â€Å"the sunshine which poured† expresses the excellent mood of the heroes. F. S. Fitzgerald vividly depicts his image by using â€Å"being unfairly saddled with responsibility† to distinguish Philip’s condition during the conversation. Thee author used the personification â€Å"eyes roved nervously around the room† and for his eyes â€Å"resting for a moment† shows how unconfident and shy Gordon was at the moment?when George was alone in the room. The metaphor â€Å"the morning sunshine poured into the room† is used to create a relaxing atmosphere to stress Philip’s confidence. The author implies the metaphor â€Å"I can draw like a streak† in order to prove his talent. Also one point is their voice, wh ich is changed, too. Firstly they spoke eagerly, gradually enthusiastic, moreover we can see some peculiarities of colloquial and literary speech â€Å"Weil, how was Gordy, old boy! † Im all in. , look all shot to lead the readers into the positive feelings of old friends. But during the conversation the situation changes so the voice becomes: miserable, shaking and trembling with a hesitant note and cold formalism, shook his head impatiently. Asyndeton Its an air of worry and poverty and sleepless nights was used in order to support the miserable emotional attitude of Gordon. In conclusion we can mention that Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald is considered a member of the Lost Generation, and key terms of Fitzgerald’s works Jazz Age, Lost Generation and American Dream. Analysis Of Looking Backward: 2000-1887 Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward: 2000-1887 was an attempt to show Americans who desired the utopian sense of community what it could truly be. Looking Backward addressed the yearnings of a society stricken by economic panics and social collapse by proposing an Eden-like community in which war, hunger, greed and malice were eradicated from society. While the story followed the wonderment of Julian West as he awoke in a Boston of 2000 AD after 113 years of sleep, the text focused on Bellamy's description through the kindly and omniscient character, Dr. Leete of a post-revolutionary society which emancipated the individual from the horrors of capitalism. As the story progresses, it becomes obvious that Bellamy is simply trying to suggest ways in which to improve his own society at the time whether it be politics or business practices. The first thing Julian inquires about his the problem of labor strikes, something very prominent in his time due to the newly formed labor unions. The National Labor Union (NLU) hailed the virtues of a simpler America, when workers controlled their workday, earned a decent living, and had time to be good citizens (Davidson, Nation of Nations, 626). Dr. Leete explains that with generous capital, any worker with a decent idea can become his own boss and the need for unions and strikes desisted. This was something that had begun occurring already in Bellamys time, as had monopolies. This was the second step in the eradication of strikes as companies began to aggregate and form large syndicates. Finally, the largest syndicate of all, the government took over all industry. When it was proposed that the nation should assume their functions (corporations), the suggestions implied nothing impractical even to the timid (Bellamy, Looking Backward, 67). With this in mind, Julian asks who the en emies of the government are, whether they are other nations or natural ills. Dr. Leete responds with the mind-blowing realization of a perfect society. We have no wars nowbut in order to protect every citizen against hunger, cold, nakedness, and provide for his physical and mental needs, the function is assumed of directing his industry for a term of years (Bellamy, Looking Backward, 68). Then, based on what people were good and wished to do, they were placed in their permanent jobs for which they worked until 45, the age of retirement. Another problem with employment was wages. In the 19th century, wages were on the average very low with the average worker having to spend nearly all their money on food and shelter without room for luxury. Now, everyone earned the same thing and it was his or her hours of work that varied from job to job. Even if everyone worked, problems would still occurred with production in the 19th century. Since producer has no clue as to how much of a certain product was needed by the population, there was almost always a surplus or lack of a certain product. In the new society, distribution was carefully calculated by an average consumption rate. Thus there is never a shortage and any surplus can be given to other nations. Another problem was the schism between the rich and the poor. There wasnt enough of a median for the two groups to interact except with through work-hire relationships. The real problem was money, something this world didnt have. This also eliminated the need for crime since everyone had the same amount and no one was jealous of anyone elses property. A History of African Slave Traders During the era of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Europeans did not have the power to invade African states or kidnap African slaves at will. For the most part, the 12.5 million slaves transported across the Atlantic Ocean were purchased from African slave traders. It is a piece of the triangle trade about which there are still many critical misperceptions. Motivations for Slavery One question that many Westerners have about African slavers, is why were they willing to sell their own people? Why would they sell Africans to Europeans? The simple answer to this question is that they did not see slaves as their own people. Blackness (as an identity or marker of difference) was a preoccupation of Europeans, not Africans. There was also in this era no sense of being African. (Indeed, to this day, individuals are more likely to identify as being African rather than, say, Kenyan only after leaving Africa.) Some slaves were prisoners of, and many of these may have been seen as enemies or rivals to those who sold them. Others were people who had fallen into debt. They were different by virtue of their status (what we might think of today as their class). Slavers also kidnapped people, but again, there was no reason they would inherently see slaves as their own. Slavery as a Part of Life It might be tempting to think that African slave traders did not know how bad European plantation slavery was, but there was a lot of movement across the Atlantic. Not all traders would have known about the horrors of the Middle Passage or what life awaited slaves, but others at least had an idea. There are always people willing to ruthlessly exploit others in the quest for money and power, but the story of the African slave trade goes much further than a few bad people. Slavery and the sale of slaves, though, were parts of life. The concept of not selling slaves to willing buyers would have seemed strange to many people up until the 1800s. The goal was not to protect slaves, but to ensure that oneself and ones kin were not reduced to slaves. A Self-Replicating Cycle As the slave trade intensified in the 16 and 1700s, it also became harder not to participate in the trade in some regions of West Africa. The enormous demand for African slaves led to the formation of a few states whose economy and politics were centered around slave raiding and trading. States and political factions that participated in the trade gained access to firearms and luxury goods, which could be used to secure political support. States and communities who were not actively participating in the slave trade were increasingly at a disadvantage. The Mossi Kingdom is an example of a state that resisted the slave trade until the 1800s when it began trading in slaves as well. Opposition to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade The Mossi Kingdom was not the only African state or community to resist selling slaves to Europeans. For instance, the king of the Kongo, Afonso I, who had converted to Catholicism, tried to stop the slave of slaves to Portuguese traders. He lacked the power, however, to police the whole of his territory, and traders as well as nobles engaged in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade to gain wealth and power. Alfonso tried writing to the Portuguese king and asking him to stop Portuguese traders from engaging in the slave trade, but his plea was ignored. The Benin Empire offers a very different example. Benin sold slaves to Europeans when it was expanding and fighting many wars - which produced prisoners of war. Once the state stabilized, it stopped trading slaves, until it started to decline in the 1700s. During this period of increasing instability, the state resumed participation in the slave trade.

Shakespeare’s poems are the monument of a remarkable genius but they are also the monuments of a remarkable age. The greatness of Shakespeare’s achievement was largely made possible by the work of his immediate predecessors, Sidney and Spenser. Shakespeare’s sonnets are intensely personal and are records of his hopes and fears, love and friendships, infatuations and disillusions that in turn acquire a universal quality through their intensity. The vogue of the sonnet in the Elizabethan age was brief but was very intense. Sir Thomas Wyatt and The Earl of Surrey brought the Petrarchan sonnet to England and with that an admiration for lyrical poetry. This had major consequences on English verse; it was not only due to the beauty of the form of the sonnet but also because the Sonnet had become the vehicle of expression of one’s personal feelings. It was with the sonnet that Lyricism entered English Poetry. The Elizabethan sonnets show the mingling of the conventional with the original. There was a greater influence of Italy and France on the English sonnet form but in the hands of the three great masters Sidney, Spenser and Shakespeare it took a unique form. The sonnets had marks of sincerity that were in direct relation to life and their authors. In the Elizabethan Age there were dramatic authors who wrote verse as secondary to their plays and the songs or the lyric were the best in these collections. The songs of this period had the blending of the genius of the people and the artistic sense awakened by humanism. England became the impassioned lover of songs. Most were love-songs, some very free and profane but there were religious songs as well and many were purely fantastic. But Shakespeare’s songs were the most original and spontaneous and they were rich in their impression of Nature. They contained a sort of fresh and rustic realism. Like in ‘Winter’s Tale’ the image of â€Å"when daffodils begin to peer† and the white sheet is â€Å"bleaching on the hedge.† And also the purely fantastic songs, which borrow from Nature as in ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’, banishing the â€Å"spotted snakes with double tongue.† Shakespeare’s sonnets cannot be classified. They are embedded in a scene and lose their special beauty and subtlety when taken out of context. The majority of Shakespeare’s poems were written in the early stage of his career. The narrative poems ‘Venus and Adonis... ...t displayed when he says, â€Å"Against my love shall be as I am now, With Time’s injurious hand crush’d and o’erworn†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (LXIII) Shakespeare’s sonnets are concerned with the relationship of individual experience (personal ties of love and friendship) with Time. The poems express a conviction of the permanence and validity of emotion in all its different forms, as sonnet 116 does â€Å"Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks Within his bending sickle’s compass come†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Shakespeare felt that under the pressure of mutability ‘love’ becomes ‘lust’; it changes form being an intense human experience to an expenditure of ‘spirit’. As love and friendship are born in time they are subjected to impermanence and so he believed that â€Å"what is rooted in time, time itself destroys.† And so in sonnet XCIV he says â€Å"Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds.† The Sonnets of Shakespeare hold a dominant place among the development of the Sonnet sequence in the Elizabethan period. His poems show how the sonnet form in it’s strict formal limits imposes upon the language a distinctive economy and intensity. The sonnets might be based on historical events but they have a Universal significance.

A public schools’ job is to create a standardized environment for students of the general population; however, public schools don’t always meet the needs of the students. Charter schools exist to meet the needs of the students and are more open to parental involvement and local control over state and bureaucracies’ control. However, â€Å"charter schools may deter some minority, poor, and working families from seeking enrollment by requiring them to complete volunteer hours and failing to provide transportation and free lunches to eligible students† (Schnaiberg 2000). My school I create will take the benefits of public schools and the benefits of charter schools to create an emphasis on individual learning and respect for cultural diversity. My school offers students in preschool through twelfth grade, an extended school day and longer school year, because most of December is off. My secular school is founded on respecting and encouraging other religions t hus the school works around religious holidays, creating all secular and religious holidays off days. School is in session September 3rd through June 20th. Students in early childhood education program and kindergarten are in class Monday-Friday 7:30am-12:30 pm. Students in first through fifth are in class Monday-Friday 7:00am-4:45 pm. Students in sixth through eighth are in class Monday-Friday 6:45am-4:45 pm. Students in ninth through twelfth are in class Monday-Friday 6am-12:30 pm. Students in ninth through twelfth grade are required to have a Monday-Friday work experience internship; students under sixteen have an on-campus internship (1-4pm), while students over sixteen have an off-campus internship (1:30-4:30pm). My school’s goals are to have students by the end of twelfth grade be able to understand and comprehend at or near college level. In addition, students will learn three languages (English, Spanish, and another), read music sheets, be able to play a musical instrument or sing, have life skills, and have a knowledge of the diverse world we live in. All students pre school through twelfth grade will learn English composition, math, science, grammar, social sciences, geography, reading, literature, foreign languages, visual/performing arts (music, art, theatre, and dance), cultural diversity, U.S. government/economy, and physical education. Middle school students will learn speech: interpersonal communication, small group communication, argumentation, intercultural communication, public speaking, and forensics/debate. Middle school and high school students will learn required electives: basic life skills, introduction to computers, cultures of the world, nutrition/health/safety/careers, life skills, philosophy/religions/cultural anthropology, and human sexuality/anatomy/physiology. My school’s goals are to have students prepared for college and/or having a job as well as serving in the community. In addition to a work experience internship, high school students are required to take personal electives, which are any additional high school electives taken through the local community college or 30 units of college units though AP, CLEP, Dantes, etc. Middle school students are required to take personal electives, which are any additional middle school electives that are high school level. All students sixth through twelfth are required to complete community service to graduate and achieve units (10 units=20 hrs). Middle school students are required to complete at least sixty hours of community service and high school students are required to complete at least eighty hours of community service to graduate. Middle school students are required 360 units to graduate including personal electives and community service; high school students are required 520 units to graduate including personal electives, work internship, and community service. Summer school is required for middle school and high school students. Students are required at least twenty units. Repertory and accelerated classes available. My school holds a high sta ndard for the teachers as well for the students. Students are expected to behave, strive for excellence, respect others, have a good character, and be willing to learn, while the faculty is expected to do the same. â€Å"Most charter schools do not require their teachers to be certified† (Borsa 1999). However, my school requires all teachers K-5th to hold a Teaching Credential and a Masters Degree and teachers 6th-12th are required to hold a Masters or Doctoral Degree in the area they teach. My school promotes a healthy life style, school uniforms, and parent involvement. Parents are required to pay one fee that covers all school material, lunches, schools uniforms, field trips, and other necessary items. The food at my school, which is free, and healthy, that means no soft drinks, cookies, candy, chips, or any other junk food; all birthdays at school will be celebrated without unhealthy food. Parents are encouraged to eat healthy and show students healthy life styles. Students are required to wear a school uniform, a short-sleeved tee shirt with school logo and black pants/shorts/dress/skirt or for formal attire is long-sleeved shirt and black pants/shorts /dress/skirt. The shirt will have a color to represent a grade: Pre-K: Pink, K: Purple 1st: Blue, 2nd: Turquoise, 3rd: Green, 4th: Light Green, 5th: Yellow, 6th: Orange, 7th: Red, 8th: Maroon, 9th: Brown, 10th: Black, 11th: Gray, and 12th: White. Like the school uniform, backpacks will be in the color of the school uniform and have the students name on it. My school has no state standardized tests, but the use of state standards. Instead students are required to test into each grade through a test that measures their cognitive and behavioral level. The complete cognitive test has twenty-seven essays and 2030 multiple choice/true-false questions, which is two essays and 140 or 150 questions per grade. The cognitive test measures what the student should know by the end of each grade. Students can challenge an exam if they feel the grade or class they are in doesn’t reflect their abilities. In addition, students are required to take a â€Å"test out exam â€Å"in each subject. It serves as a measure for student learning, and an evaluation for teachers and parents. This exam is compared to the â€Å"test in exam† and options for tutoring/after school help for struggling students. If student doesn’t score higher than 80 percent on an exam, they won’t be promoted to the next class or grade unless they successfully retake the exam. The exam can be retaken twice before the student must repeat a grade of class. My school doesn’t use the Standard Letter Grade, but gives students the option for it. Instead of standard letter grades, students in K-5 will have a grade of Pass (B- or higher in Standard Letter Grade) or No Pass (C+ or lower in Standard Letter Grade). Then 6-12th grade students will have the option of keeping their grades in Pass/No Pass or having standard letter grades. (Students will be put on Academic Probation if their GPA reaches 2.99 or below.) Behavior, class participation, in-class work for students K-12 will be graded in O=Outstanding, E=Exceeds Expectations, A=Acceptable, P=Passing, N=Needs Improvement. Each week behavior and participation reports are sent home so parents can see how their student’s behavior and participation improves or becomes a problem. Teachers and parents go over the child’s portfolio, which includes tests, papers, art, quizzes, and other in-class material each quarter. At the end of the year students evaluate their own work and other’s work in the portfolio. The student, the teacher, other studen ts, and the parent grade the portfolio like pieces of art are evaluated at an art gallery. My school gives students the option of independent study or regular classroom learning in middle school and high school. All preschool through twelfth grade students are put in their cognitive level and in small classrooms of twenty students of less; however, middle school and high school students have the option of regular class or packets. In regular class students participate in in-class assignments, quizzes, and tests; students must earn homework and extra credit. Students must have at least 240 points out of 300 to pass each quarter; otherwise the quarter will be repeated in packets. In a packets class or independent study students come to class participate and take in-class quizzes and tests; however, class work is done in packets. Students must have an A- or higher to move on to the next packet. Packets are allowed to be taken home and are equivalent to one week of regular class in-class work; only Physical Education, Speech, Science Lab, and Visual/Performing Arts are not allowed to be taken in packets. The packets are recommended for students who are ill, on religious holidays, etc., which prevent them from attending class. In addition, all students on holiday (December) have the option of completing packets for credit and completing quizzes and tests online with a proctor; the packet requires an A- or better to move on. Overall, my school focuses on creating an emphasis on individual learning and respect for cultural diversity; however, there are intuitional and individual barriers. Intuitional barriers will arise when parents who aren’t secular will try to implement their beliefs into the curriculum, but this school offers a well-rounded approach to learning not faith-based learning. In addition, problems may arise when parents try to control what the child learns and what they become; parents are encouraged to let their children be good at what they are good at. Small class sizes and indivualized learning can cause problems for students and parents who want a more mainstreamed education. Students may feel it is too hard for them, but this school is meant to be challenging in academics, but not in socializing. Since there will be intuitional and individual barriers, parents and teachers are encouraged to be open and discuss any problems and look for what is in the best interest of the child. My belief is that education should offer students prepare students for life outside of education. I provided a school that offers students an extended school day and longer school year and summer school to keep kids out of trouble and respect religious beliefs. My school has educated students prepared for college and/or having a job as well as serving in the community. In addition, I provided a school that promotes a healthy life style, school uniforms, individual learning, good behavior, options in learning, and parent involvement. The goal of my school is to prepare and educate students to learn and be the best they can be in whatever they are good at. This charter school will create an emphasis on individual learning and respect for cultural diversity and more. Limitations that Freedom of Speech Should Have Essay

Freedom of speech should have some limitations. The American people should have the right to say whatever they want, but to an extent. Whether it is on signs or verbally some things should not be expressed. The United States is well known for being â€Å"the home of the free,† but some people take their freedom a bit too far. People can burn flags, protest at military funerals, even use the â€Å"n† word and watching pornography in libraries. To start off, our country has come so far since September 11th, but right after caused a state of confusion with the entire nation. Next, when a soldier dies, a family has to prepare a funeral and all that goes into laying his or her daughter for an eternal rest. Sadly, military funerals are one of the more common targets that Westboro Baptist Church protests. Members of the Westboro church can hold up signs at military funerals that say, â€Å"Don’t Pray for the USA,† and â€Å"America is Doomed† (Biskupic Protest).
